"Every Ghost has its story."

13 Ghosts: The Series was conceived as a thirteen-episode dramatic horror series with an ensemble cast that elevated, expanded, and raised the stakes of the iconic 13 Ghosts cult franchise.

Each episode explored and examined the origin stories of the titular thirteen ghosts, their personalities, plights, and fates. These stories served as intertwining through-lines connected to the mysterious legacy of Cyrus Kriticos and his present-day extended family, who had become the caretakers of the Kriticos Compound. The sprawling estate harbored a plethora of secrets and, of course, a collection of unsettled, unhinged, and downright “piss your pants” terrifying entities.

Every culture in the world has its ghost stories, and this reimagining of 13 Ghosts presented an international sampling of supernatural folklore. The ghost stories within each episode were designed to have their own stylistic look and feel, explored and influenced by each individual director. The tale of a double-crossed luchador evoked the style of classic El Santo films from the 1960s, while a Japanese ghost story drew inspiration from Onibaba. These ghost vignettes were intended to stand apart stylistically while reinforcing the thematic identity of each episode.

The Ghosts’ stories and themes were crafted to examine and mirror society’s evolving fears and anxieties, making 13 Ghosts as relevant and impactful a property as ever. The series aimed to connect with audiences across a broad spectrum of backgrounds while exploring a wide range of human, and inhuman, emotions.

Human beings constantly seek narratives that weave together their pasts, presents, and futures through goals, fears, and expectations. This thematic foundation informed the “Dark Zodiac,” an expansion of the astrological mythology introduced in the 2001 remake of Thir13en Ghosts. The series expanded this concept into a larger world-building mythology that tied the ghosts together across generations.

The project respected and paid homage to the deep roots of the original William Castle cult classic and its passionate fan base, while reinventing its ensemble characters and narrative arcs to propel the property into the 21st century and attract new audiences. An Augmented Reality companion app was even proposed as a modern homage to the original Ghost Viewer glasses from the William Castle era. With so many ghost stories to tell, the concept was envisioned as a potential multi-season narrative.

A pilot script was completed alongside a comprehensive season arc detailing the intertwining timelines and character breakdowns for all thirteen episodes. The creative goal was to position the series as a major new horror property capable of scaring its way into audiences’ homes while continuing the timeless tradition of ghost stories that leave eternal impressions. Dark Castle was incredibly enthusiastic about the project and worked with us to develop the pitch. Sadly, Sony Pictures Television ultimately chose not to move forward with the project, but we refuse to let the ghosts stay buried. We fully intend to continue pushing to see this ambitious and terrifying series finally come to life.
